Were it not for a continuous flood of knowledgeable network and computer support staff, industry in the United Kingdom (as elsewhere) would surely be drawn to a standstill. There is a huge demand for people to support systems and users alike. Whereupon we're all becoming growingly beholden to our PC's, we in turn find ourselves increasingly dependent on the well trained network engineers, who maintain those systems.

A lot of trainees think that the traditional school, college or university path is the right way even now. So why then are qualifications from the commercial sector becoming more popular with employers? With university education costs climbing ever higher, plus the IT sector's recognition that corporate based study often has more relevance in the commercial field, there's been a big surge in Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA authorised training routes that create knowledgeable employees at a fraction of the cost and time involved. Academic courses, as a example, become confusing because of a great deal of background study - with much too broad a syllabus. This holds a student back from getting enough core and in-depth understanding on a specific area.

Assuming a company understands what areas need to be serviced, then they just need to look for the particular skill-set required. Commercial syllabuses all have to conform to the same requirements and can't change from one establishment to the next (in the way that degree courses can).

It only makes sense to consider retraining programs which will lead to industry accepted accreditations. There are way too many minor schools suggesting minor 'in-house' certificates which aren't worth the paper they're printed on in today's commercial market. The main industry leaders such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe have globally recognised skills programs. Huge conglomerates such as these can make sure you stand out at interview.
